The Basic Network Setup
Each digital signage network requires basic input components that include a Content Management System (CMS), a digital signage player (or media player), plus software in order for it to function. What is digital signage?
- Digital signage is a powerful tool that can be used to advertise, promote, inform, and convey information in real-time. It may be used to replace and/or enhance traditional print signage.
All digital sigange networks are comprised of six basic components:
Hardware - These are the display screens in various sizes, types, and applications.
Content Management System (CMS) - This is the "server" that interfaces with the media player, which enables access to the software programs. A cloud-based CMS has no limits on users, storage, devices, maintenance, or back-ups. An on-premise CMS provides outright control over the network.
Media Players or Sytem on a Chip (SoC) - This is the device or "hard drive" that interfaces with the CMS. The media player functions as the input/output mechanism and allocates memory. Most are external devices while some are built into the display screen.
Software - These are the programs, called widgets, that produce the content.
Operating System - Just like personal computers, the operating system acts as the intermediary between the media player and the software programs. Current operating systems available for digital signage are Windows, iOS, Android, Chrome, and Linux.
Content - These are the images, videos, text, live feeds, maps, and other visuals displayed on the screen.
How much does digital signage cost?
- The total cost of ownership of a digital signage network will depend on your company's goals, the application (free-standing, kiosk, outdoor, indoor, touch screen, etc...), your budget, and the support services you desire.
The cost of the hardware will depend on the size, application, bezel width, brightness, resolution, physical connectors, warranty details, and playback functionality.
Media players/SoC devices may come pre-loaded with dozens of standard software programs, called widgets. Media players/SoC may be purchased for a one-time price or on a subscrption basis. Emergency and Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) alerts are considered premium widgets and may require a monthly licensing fee.
Additional service solutions such as installation, implementation, content design, content management services, enhanced training, and personalized support are considered concierge and are optional.

How do I select the right equipment?
- There are a variety of brands/manufacturers of digital signage equipment, with each having their own unique capabilities and compatabilities. We will guide you through the entire process to ensure you have the right equipment combination that is best suited for your application.
The core equipment that should be thoughtfully considered are:
Display Screen - When selecting hardware, take into consideration screen size, optimal viewing angles, and distance from intended viewers. We recommend commercial grade LCD, LED, or IPS display screens over consumer grade screens, because they have higher contrast, higher brightness, additional ventilation, and are intended to be in operation 24/7. Also, 1080 pixels is the minimum resolution suggested for a more reliable high quality content output.
Media Player - Your digital signage application is the primary factor in determining the type of media player needed. The more advanced the content you desire (ie. 3-D, 4-K visuals, or animations), the more robust media player you will need. In most cases, we recommend an external media player over a built-in player because it provides the flexibility to upgrade the software without having to upgrade the hardware, too.
Software - Having the right software is critical to directing and shaping digital messages and advertising in order to maximize ROI. Most software come bundled with a standard set of widgets like weather, live traffic, YouTube, Vimeo, Google Docs, etc... and must be compatible with the media player. We recommend software that will be scalable with maximum relevance and complimentary upgrades.
How do I create the content to display on the screen?
- Spend some time determining the development, deployment strategy, social media aspect, and management of the content.
With digital signage, content is king. Using a standard web browser, access the various pre-loaded drag-and-drop widgets and/or the pre-designed templates from the software package. Or use MS Power Point or other compatible graphics software to originate content yourself. Don't be afraid to be creative.
Once you have created messages that are simple, easy to read, and free of spelling errors; add graphics, videos, calls to action, and be sure to rotate the content to keep it engaging.
